There are various criteria to consider when choosing a triathlon suit.
Fit
A triathlon suit should fit snugly without being uncomfortable. A distinction is generally made between triathlon suits with a compression fit and those with a comfort fit.
Aerodynamics
A high-performance triathlon suit can save you several minutes in an Ironman.
Comfort
Comfort is another important factor. Key factors include the quality of the seams, elasticity, breathability and quick-drying properties.
The chamois
It must be thin enough for running, yet provide sufficient protection for cycling. This can vary from one brand to another.
Technical fabrics
Advanced materials promote moisture-wicking and breathability, as well as UV protection and resistance to chlorine and salt, thereby ensuring the suit’s durability.
Pockets
Pockets are very important over long distances, but less so over short distances. Although designed for all three sports, pockets can cause drag whilst swimming and cycling, which is why some wetsuits now feature internal pockets.
Sleeved or sleeveless
Short sleeves ensure better penetration through the water, better sun protection and muscle support. On the other hand, sleeveless designs can provide a feeling of coolness in very hot weather.
Compression
The level of compression can vary from one wetsuit to another. Optimal compression ensures muscle support, reduces vibrations and is said to aid recovery. A wetsuit offering less compression, on the other hand, is more comfortable.
Durability
The quality of the seams and the durability of the fabrics are factors to bear in mind to ensure the triathlon suit lasts well.
Budget
This is a key factor. For this reason, we have selected a range of high-quality products, with prices ranging from single to quadruple. However, we have deliberately excluded from our range any poor-quality tri suits that might make the race unpleasant. The price of our tri suits starts at 129 francs, which guarantees comfort during the race. As you move up the range, there are tri suits offering advantages in terms of aerodynamics and compression, though these aren’t necessarily essential for all triathletes.
In the next article we will suggest some tri suits according to different criterias.
